Our Journey

At The Village Markets, we believe in community. Caring for the community by giving back and also, by working towards a more sustainable future. Our journey to running a sustainable event began when we declared the event plastic-free.

We've already saved 200 tonnes of plastic from being used at our event, by going plastic bag and single use straw free. We've also stopped using single use plastics for the running of our events for parking and signage.

Since founding, The Village Markets has placed a large emphasis on reducing ‘fast-fashion’ by not only supporting locally made items, but by the events monthly Rack Sale. Each month, the event hosts 40 locals who sell preloved clothing, which has garnered a huge following and attracts a crowd early each Sunday morning on the first of the month. The conscious decision to promote recycling fashion as been a part of the business since founding.

Zero Waste Event Goal

Having worked towards being a plastic free event for many years, our next goal is to be a zero waste event. This entails ensuring the event is completely plastic-free, then diverting all waste from landfill to recycling or composting.

We want to be industry leaders, setting the benchmark for how events are produced. Our five-year plan includes being a zero-waste event.

Working closely with Climate Wave, we've been able to reduce landfill by 86%. We've achieved this by sorting waste, ensuring any waste disposed of on site is biodegradable and the remainder is recycled. We're proudly composting food and biodegradable items on site and working on educating our customers, that we're aiming to be a zero waste event.

In an effort to reduce waste, The Village Markets has several reusable market items available for purchase at each event and online.
