New to TVM this Sunday is Allure Art, by Cassandra Ashton Thomas. Founded in her studio at Runaway Bay in May 2018, Cassandra a graphic designer, works with alcohol ink, ink and watercolors to create original art pieces.

TVM: What inspires your work?
CT: My inspiration comes from the colours and forms found in nature. Living on the Gold Coast I am surrounded by a never-ending wonderland of oceans, lush green forests and a bounty of colourful flora. Using colour as language, my work is alive with emotion through the movement of inks and luscious layers. Each painting is filled with layer upon layer of ink, building a rich history into each piece.

What do you find to be the biggest challenge in having your own business?
For me one of the biggest challenges in being a full-time artist is the pressure to compete with big box stores and items made cheaply in other countries. Also reserving uninterrupted creative time in amongst busy days! It is the cornerstone of growth and success for my business since its vibrant nature is what differentiates it from others.

If you were to offer any advice to other emerging artists, what would it be?
To listen to what others have to say—friends, family, experts, even yourself. When it comes to things that have to do with your entrepreneurial goals, be a sponge. As you learn, start to work out the idea in your head. Write things down. Keep notes from all the resources you come across to develop a detailed plan. Don’t go it alone! Call on your trusted advisers and contacts to help work through and get you back on track.

You can find Allure Art at TVM this Sunday 15 July.

The weekend is rolling around quicker than we know it and if you haven't made plans, we've got a an epic art show for you to check out.

Northern NSW artist, Tesse Terrell presents her second exhibition Hep Kitten Corral, at Maverick Hair & Art Space on Saturday 9thJune 2018.

Terrell, a true vintage aficionado and fashion lover, draws inspiration from her own personal wardrobe for the 50’s themed collection that stars ideal housewives and rockabilly dancers.

The 20 pieces, created over the past 6 months, sees Terrell expand on her signature mixed-media style, all completed with painstaking detail, as found in her previous collection.

Each work is cut and set by hand, with the exhibition seeing Terrell experiment with additional textures such as jewellery and fabric from her wardrobe archives to bring her works to life.

The Hep Kitten Corral - a tribute to vintage fashion, will be right at home during Coolangatta’s iconic Cooly Rocks On event and comes on the back of her first sell-out solo exhibition, Death Collection.

Hep Kitten Corral runs Saturday 9th– 18thJune 2018 at Maverick Hair & Art Space, Griffith Street Coolangatta.

TVM stallholder Ale Ramirez of MAVERIKSTUDIO is getting ready to launch an exhibition on Friday May 8th from 7pm until 10pm at White Box Gallery in Southport titled 'COLOMBIA'. Read on to find out more....

How do you feel about your home? Your culture? Your identity? Ale Ramirez is a Colombian who has called Australia home (away from home) for the last eight years.

“I look and sound different, (foreign, dark skinned, accent, mannerisms) and people often ask me “Where are you from?” “What are your thoughts about Australia?” The more I am asked, the more I realise the misconceptions the world has about Colombia, it’s culture and community.”

Cocaine. Pablo Escobar. Guerrillas. War. Poverty. Crime. No!

This has given birth to the COLOMBIA Exhibition. You are invited to celebrate another side of Colombian culture. Explore the history, tribes and landscape of the place that is so close to her heart.

Spirituality. Design. Art. Landscape. Culture. Community. Love. Passion.

Like most developing nations, Colombia has a dark past. Media perpetuates this painful reputation, putting a shadow over the truth. As a proud Colombian woman, Ale Ramirez seeks to design against the stereotype. She communicates the truth through art, design and business.

“The world needs to know that we are more than our troubled past. We are more than the media image. We are more than a backdrop to pop culture films. I invite you into my heart and to see my home through my eyes. Fall in love with an honest, beautiful and strong Colombia.”

MAVERIKSTUDIO is a multi-disciplinary creative studio. There are two sides to Maverik. Firstly, we specialise in tailored creative outputs; digital services, graphic design, branding, photography and product management.

Secondly, we import artisan products from Colombian tribes, working with the craftsman to support the financial wellbeing of their traditional way of life. Our services are varied – design, culture and community always work hand in hand in our eyes. We reconnect consumers with the makers. When is the last time you knew who made your handbag? Or dress? Our products close the gap between the craftsman and consumer.

Love comes before money. We like to think big but we want to do things that we love.

We support two Colombian tribes – the Wayuu and the Chami Puro. The Wayuu tribe, an indigenous Latin American community inhabit, La Guajira Peninsula, on the border of Colombia and Venezuela. The Wayuu people have a very strong matriarchal culture. The women have a final say when it comes to cultural, religious, political, family & medical matters. The Wayuu women are responsible for passing down the traditions and cultural beliefs. Maintaining the indigenous language, beliefs and traditions in a rapidly developing world is a massive achievement for the Wayuu people. MAVERIKSTUDIO donates 10% of profits the tribe.

Much like the history of Indigenous Australians, the Colombian tribes have been affected by instability through decades of politics, corruption and forced displacement. The tribes of my homeland use their talents and cultural strength to grow and push forward. The crafts they produce are a tangible celebration of culture, pride and strength.

The foundation of MAVERIKSTUDIO is one of service to the community. We make money to pay the rent, but we work to be productive for our cause. Of the 86 tribes in Colombia, we are supporting two. One day we will make it to 86. On our last trip to Colombia we were fortunate enough to be invited to stay with the tribe, meet with the artists, share their stories and become a part of their family.

The COLOMBIA exhibition will show you the other side of Colombia. It showcases many different cities and villages. See images of our first donation to the Wayuu tribe. Take home a piece of the exhibition with you, postcards depicting some of our favourite images are available.

You can also purchase MAVERIKSTUDIO products (at the special price of 15% off) and speak to Ale Ramirez about her passion for Colombia and its people.

We welcome you to make donations (large or small), which will be directly provided to the tribes of Colombia.

Find the Facebook page for this event, here.

Making the drive all the way from Sydney to join the TVM lineup for the first time this Sunday, is artist Libby Watkins.

We had a quick chat to Libby to find out what what inspires her and what pieces we can expect to find at her stall this weekend (did somebody say pineapples and flamingos!). Be sure to pop by and check out Libby's work, we can't wait.

When did your creative business begin?

I never stop making things out of things- creating, problem solving, making things out of nothing...led me into studying interior and then fashion design. I have never been able to stop sketching, drawing and illustrating. Working for brands meant always contributing to an already existing brief, an established brand DNA.

I would come home from work and keep going in my garage studio for some down time. On weekends neighbours started popping in to see my pieces, bringing friends.

I started selling my pieces from my garage nearly 6 or so years ago slowly, just as a bit of a side project. From there I started to do a local market to let people know where I was and invite to see my pieces.

Now I am a full time freelance designer and artist fusing both skills together in design and art briefs.

What sort of work will you be showcasing?

I have contrasting statement pieces, I am conversational in my works and yet sometimes understated for a contrasting reaction.

Using bright watercolours and layering techniques.

Where do you create your masterpieces?

Newport, Sydney, all made locally, all materials are purchased from local businesses, and this important to me and what I am supporting.

What inspires you?

I love old films, taking a coastal walk and wandering to clear the mind and focus on new ideas. I love the ocean the blues the movement the size of the ocean washes away any worries and reminds you of what is important.

I keep all my old magazines and editorial shoots I pick them up and could happily flick through all day long.

I recreate things, give  a new life to objects, scenarios and get lost with my thoughts.

Latest collection consists of?

Inky Pineapples, palm trees and Flamingos- OH MY!

What's on your mood board?

I have some colour threads, colour palettes made up from collected colour chips and bits of textures, and things to keep me challenged- I found the most amazing shell the other day with a creamy pink metallic, the more I stare at it, I see an island and escape, so amazing like cloud watching pictures and shapes. I am working on new fabric prints between days of painting at the moment. My mood board is forever changing.

What’s your creative space like?

Clean crisp, dapples of colour and chaotic idea. FInished works, half completed works and high energy doing what I love! I am my most busy at night, there is something about the world being still at night, that no one is watching me, contacting me and I just draw from the dead of the night to create!

What music do you listen to while designing/creating?

Sometimes things hit me, I am either in the creation cave and block every possible noise and sound and sometimes I really need the inspiration- I love playlists from my friends- When I am working solo it helps to know whilst you are working alone, you have the support and encouragement from your friends, I love it- because I don’t know what will be next, makes it an interesting musical conversation in the studio.

A day in the life of you consists of?

I work on my design projects, create artworks draft up ideas respond and work with my clients on artworks and projects. Talking to my beautiful stockists, I work really closely with these people. My artworks are layered and consist of constant lots of bits of work so I do this in between my day. I love the design element of my life, but mid through something sometimes I have an idea and I have to just stop what I am doing and get into what I am inspired to do right then! Some people call it being side tracked I like to call it multi tasking.

Which stalls are you most looking forward to visiting, at TVM?

I am very excited to meet Kirstin from Kavari, we were recently introduced on email. I look forward to meeting her in person, and picking up a few bits from Kavari and scouting the stalls at TVM on Sunday to take back with me. I cant wait to see what beautiful set up Madison & Montana bring this sunday as well, so much talent to explore.

Favourite reads/blogs?

Cloudy Rhodes is insane to my eyes, looking at her work takes you away to a far away land! I enjoy reading the Design Files exploring inspirational creative minds building or contributing to successful empires, keeps me inspired and has great reads!

Why TVM?

Why not? I don’t do many markets but this looks RAD,  and the weather is always at perfection - I can pop into Pompidou (Byron Bay) on the way.

TAKODA DECOR, formerly known as Shikoba Delicates, will return to TVM this Sunday!

It's been a busy time for the brand, which has established a huge following online thanks to endorsements from celebs such as Cheyenne Tozzi and Pip Edwards and a feature in the Sunday Telegraph as the 'website of the week'.

Sales have been booming and following a big re-brand, designer Teena, is set to return to TVM this Sunday with an amazing new collection of handcrafted goodness. We've been told to get excited about the new lighting wall features.

What's even more exciting about TAKODA DECOR? The brands new motto 'Recycle.Create.Donate' means they are now donating 5% of every online sale to the buyers choice of charity. We think that's pretty cool.

For more, head to their website, here.
