Producer Marquee Moon and MC Kimbosabi fell in love via a Byron Bay garage to the beat of disco samples and Japanese elevator music. Now, not only a typical couple that wears each others clothes, the DJ duo burst onto the scene in a big way last summer as In the Flowers, steamrolling a major set at Party in the Paddock, a residency at Soultrain Byron Bay and Locura's CherryPop Drag night.

Blooming with a fresh scent of 'funkadelic jungle grooves', likened to influences; Daft Punk and Steve Monite's Nigerian Funk represented in their rumbling downtempo house to frantic footwork.

TVM's resident Intern Gemma Lyndon chatted with the pair in the lead up to their debut set at TVM this Sunday 4 August at Burleigh Heads, followed by TVM crowd fave Lily Budiasa.

The lineup:
8:30am - 10:30am In The Flowers
11am - 1pm Lily Budiasa

Hi Kim and Marcos! Welcome to The Village Markets!

We are so excited for your first gig at TVM this Sunday. What should we expect from you guys?

Hi there! Expect some torrential rains because we are going to be sweating up a storm! LOL just kidding. We will bringing only good vibes to TVM. Expect a lot of disco classics as well as a mix of jungle funk grooves that really get your feet stomping through the markets.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves? Where are you from and where did you come up with the idea and inspiration for In the Flowers?

Kimbosabi is originally from Central Queensland and Marcos is all the way from Buenos Aires Argentina… Hola! We met about a year ago and fell in love via a Byron Bay garage to the beat of disco samples and Japanese elevator music.

In The Flowers is the concept of bringing you out of your mind and dropping into your body. We love having an energy exchange with our crowd and bringing good vibes to the people. We are obviously inspired by nature and flowers and how they blossom in their own way.

Why did you choose the Gold Coast’s The Village Markets to perform at?

We love TVM and would always pop in whenever we’re around Goldy. We love the vibe and walking around with a coffee then sitting under the trees listening to some good tunes. Sunday sorted!

We hear you are now resident DJs at the Northern in Byron! What has been your biggest highlight to date?

The Soultrain night at The Northern was definitely a highlight for us! We were so impressed by the turn out of the town and especially how dressed up everyone was! Can we please live in cheetah print shirts and flares forever?!

How do you describe your performance style ?

Our performance style is a mix of Kimbosabi’s love for dancing and expression whilst blending Marquee Moon’s experience as a live artist in psychedelic rock and funk.

When you aren’t performing in front of crowds, what do you do in your spare time?

Marquee is a music producer so he is constantly working in other projects as well as working on a light installation for live sets at Festivals. Kimbosabi is working at Spell & the Gypsy as well as studying Kinesiology. She is preparing to launch her first womens dance night in Byron! Watch this space.

Favourite artists (other than yourself ).

Kevin Parker, anyone from 90s HipHop, The Flaming Lips, Andre 3000, Unkown Mortal Orchestra, Khruangbin, Gorillaz, Noname, Daft Punk, PNAU.

How do you get inspired and what do you do to get the creative ideas flowing?

Lately we have been traveling up and down the coast and actually find a lot of inspiration on our road trips. We would turn it into our own game where we pick a theme and start making a playlist about it like Psychedelic Hungover where we combine dreamy-hipnotic beats with psychedelic rock like Air, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, Gorillaz, The Beatles.

What part of your job would people find most surprising?

The amount of times people request Staying Alive by Bee-Gees… luckily for us we froth the Bee-Gees!

Who would you like to have a 30-minute meeting with?

Oprah.

Best advice you have ever received?

"Nothing in nature blooms all year, be patient with yourself"

Thanks so much for sharing guys! x

Q & A with musician and TVM performer Lily Budiasa, by TVM Intern Gemma Lyndon.

I must admit every time I visit The Village Markets I am constantly drawn to your remarkable voice accompanied by your beautifully written guitar melodies. Tell us Lily, when did you begin your singing career and what initially inspired you to perform for others?

Ever since I was a little girl, music has always been second nature. I never wanted dolls or had an interest in anything else, it was instruments, karaoke machines, what piece of furniture could be my stage. When most children were listening to The Wiggles (don’t get me wrong Dorothy the Dinosaur was my gal)… My family introduced me to the greats so they were my childhood soundtrack.

I remember living back home in Bali when I was 8 years old, we had the album “1” by The Beatles, all their number 1 hits. My neighbor Alan was British. Everyday I got out my drum sticks and he got his guitar, we pressed play and when the CD finished we started from the start over and over. That was my inspiration, I knew then that music was the only thing for me.

Besides school talent shows, it wasn’t until I was 17, studying music at University where I first started to gig properly and start making a living from it. Here I am still going.

From recording singing videos on youtube to playing at Bleach festival and Triple J to supporting Amy Shark on her Adore tour (amazing!),  what has been your biggest highlight to date?

This is hard. I’ve played so many shows, that there are highlights everywhere from as small as…

Being 18 and having a goal of headlining Elsewhere, which I’ve now done numerous times with my band.

To playing shows in Bali, playing festivals, singing at childhood friends weddings. I think for me though, when I was 17 I saw one of my favourite bands Bon Iver at The Tivoli in Brisbane. I said to myself, one day I will be on that stage singing to a full room where SO many of my favourite artists have stood. In 2017 I was the only supporting act for Lindsay Stirling (an insanely talented violinist/ performer). I played a solo set in front of a sold-out Tivoli theatre. I cried in the Green Groom.

Many musicians similar to yourself often perform for local crowds at community spaces like the markets,  how did you see The Village Markets as a platform for reaching listeners and showcasing yourself as a brand?

I first started singing at TVM about 5 years ago. It’s been my constant. Through the markets I’ve been able to show people who I am, with my originals, covers and the Lily spin I put on them, to being able to meet new people and socialize. My favourite thing to do when I’m performing is watch the enjoyment it brings to people. Every TVM gig I play, just watching people sit and take time to listen to my music is really cool and humbling. I’ve gotten so much out of The Village Markets, gigs obviously and a platform to network but the relationships I have made with the people is the best part.

You have studied a bachelor of popular music, how do you think studying this degree went in hand with your passion for music?

My degree was a dream! Going to University to study what you adore. Amazing. Walking into your block and hearing music left right and center. People think Arts degrees are abit you know.. “but it’s not a real degree”… They are, and they are hard, and no its by all means not Astrophysics but in the field of what you love, there are always things to learn and study and you still have to work for it.

It was the lecturers that became friends and your friends that became family. Ultimately the motivator that pushed me more and more to make this a full time job and prepare me for my Masters in Music Therapy.

You are currently in a band ‘TH’FIKA’ how do you stay inspired and what do you do to get creative?

Being around my band or creatives in general is my inspiration. Every musician needs someone or something to vibe off and to get the juices flowing and for me it’s being around other people. When you walk into a rehearsal or a jam with one small idea that turns into another and another and by the end you’ve made something incredible. That’s inspiration.

You are a born and bred Gold Coast gal, how do you feel living in the sunny spot of the Gold Coast reflects on your creative processes?

For a born and bred Gold Coast Girl, who is also Balinese. I would 100% take winter any day haha. In saying that, if it wasn’t for this beautiful city, the people around me and the amazing GC venues that have hosted me, I wouldn’t be the musician that people know me as.

Where can Gold Coasters hear Lily Budiasa?

My band TH’FIKA is on Spotify and all the other music platforms. I post on my Instagram where my next gigs are. So come say Hi and boogie.

Your voice has previously been known for its ‘hauntingly earthy vocals’, how would you describe your singing style?

My style has changed so much over the years from the artists I listen to , the music I write, the change in my playing and singing.

Right now I’m in a pocket where my voice carries so much soul with rasp and husk yet can still be fragile with hints of operatic and pop tones. When you sing as much as I do, you hear changes and inflections everyday. It’s kind of the fun of it, seeing what your voice can do.

What part of your job would people find most surprising?

Even though I’ve been doing this now for years. I still wake up everyday and want to practice, learn something I didn’t know the day before.

The crazy hours!! Never ending rehearsing, keeping up the maintenance of all your equipment, meetings, the heavy lifting loading in gear to every gig ie.. getting to a gig with no elevator but 7 flights of stairs. PRO TIP if you ever see a musician loading in or out just give them a helping hand.. even if it’s a microphone stand. I promise you it helps.

Who would you like to have a 30-minute meeting with?

Hans Zimmer. To pick his brain on how he orchestrated some of the best film soundtracks of all time. His creative process. Wow

Ok yep him.

Who do you love to follow on Instagram?

My mum – she’s still trying to get 200 followers.

Best advice you have ever received?

“Be humble. Be kind “

-   simple. Straight forward. How you should be in every aspect of your life.

My advice though -  We are all human beings and we should always embrace inclusion and diversity

Favorite TVM stall?

Lalah Bali – not being biased because they are family but who doesn’t love a Nasi Goreng

Shuturp

Huckleberry Flowers.

We're excited to announce that Mitch Paulsen and Chriddy Black from The Voice Season 8 will be performing live at TVM this Sunday 21st July. This will be one of the first times the Gold Coast based pair has ever played together, so you wont want to miss it!

Born and raised on the Gold Coast, 18 year-old semi-finalist Mitch Paulsen and 26-year-old fan favorite Chris ‘Chriddy’ Black blew audiences away throughout season eight of the top-rated TV show.

The pair will kick off this Sunday's event performing individually and as a duo, following TVM fave Lily Budiasa who is first up at 8:30am.

Touring Victorian artist Steve Cousins will perform at 11am.

TVM is known Australia-wide as being a cultural hub for thousands of creatives over the past 10 years, hosting the likes of international brand Peony swimwear and musicians Ziggy Alberts and Tones and I, prior to their international success.

Having only performed in public twice prior to The Voice, Paulsen says he’s looking forward to playing at TVM this Sunday.

‘The Village Market has the best Sunday atmosphere on the Gold Coast. This will be one of the first gigs we will have done together and we can’t wait to share the stage and sing some tunes,’ says Paulsen.

The Village Markets co-founder Marissa Bowden says it’s exciting for the Coast to be able to celebrate homegrown talent when the pair kicks off this Sundays event.

“We’re excited to have Mitch and Chriddy join us this Sunday for their first live performance since The Voice and allow locals to enjoy the act in a free, relaxed, open-air environment,” says Bowden.

When we discovered the guys were Gold Coast locals we just knew we needed them here at TVM, which is known as the go-to for local creatives across design, art, fashion and music.

The Village Markets is on this Sunday 21 July from 8:30am - 1pm at Burleigh Heads State School.

Some parking is available at the school and in surrounding streets, alternatively there is a large carpark 400m away on Connor Street and ample public transport options withing walking distance.

Any artists wishing to attend TVM can apply via our website, here.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Phil and Tilley

Phil and Tilley started writing music together in the autumn of 2012 surrounded by the New Forest (UK) - an ancient woodland situated on the southern coast of England and an inspiration for these lifelong friends.

Phil and Tilley play a blend of alternative acoustic/folk music, with influences from artists such as Xavier Rudd, Ben Harper and John Martyn. They incorporate their own ideas, using a slide guitar, the more traditional acoustic guitar and an unusual, fold-up-for-travel, upright bass, to create a sound that is uniquely their own. A yearning for travel and playing music has seen them play in Australia, New Zealand, France, Belgium and South East Asia but their story continues to take them wherever the music allows them to go.

Scott Dalton

When Scott Dalton was barely seven, he had abandoned bionicles, swapping Lego for Ludwig. A natural aptitude for the keyboard created a fierce passion for music unfulfilled by just one instrument. By 13, Scott had added guitar to his repertoire of skills, alternating between electric and acoustic. It was in his senior year that Scott realised the potential in his voice, honing his vocals into something of incredible power. Never the underachiever, Scott combined passion, an intrinsic knowledge of the music industry and undeniable talent into launching his singer-songwriter career. Influenced by a mixture of Matt Corby, John Mayer, Dire Straits and Pink Floyd, Scott's unique sound is one that does not demand attention but entices it. Both intimate and emboldening, Scott's music resonates with his listeners, irrespective of numbers and is not just a song but an experience.

Hannah Campbell is a warm, discerning, and joyfully vulnerable storyteller, recently moved to the Gold Coast from Melbourne, Victoria. Her style of songwriting echoes of folky roots through stories of failings and hopefullness, desire, emotional vacancy and unspoken truths.

Hannah’s trademark honest humility is the undercurrent of her shows that keeps audiences enthralled.
Her latest single Run Like Wolves received high praise from Triple J’s Roots N’ All presenter Nkechi Anele, who said “Her voice is just one of those old timey voices that could be from any generation.”
