Heya Zaynab! We're so excited to have you play some tunes at TVM this Sunday in Burleigh Heads and then also Sunday 29th in Stones Corner (yay!). We’d love to know more about your journey with music, can you tell us about how and why you chose this path?

It is becoming clearer that music- creating, sharing and facilitating it, is a predetermined path for me; a path I trust I’m meant to be on. I tried to resist it, growing up in a full-on family Steelpan band, wanting to be an actor, a journalist, a teacher, a professional/Olympic diver or volleyball player, never a musician.

The resistance was futile as it is (a) present in almost every thread of my being. It feels like a return of sorts (of Saturn, maybe...) and it feels so good for my heart and soul. It offers me therapy, self-care, love and I carry it with me wherever I go. I’m flowing with the unfolding of the journey and constantly opening up my pathway of expression.

Why did you choose TVM as a venue for your music?

An inviting website and call to musicians- a good shot in the dark, I’d say. I’m not from here so I’m relying on my resourcefulness and creativity while trying to lock in venues and performance opportunities and network with new audiences. Markets are usually a good time with the range of creative artisans, the browsing pace and people- watching, of course. The music I’ll be performing is so much about connecting and sharing with people and I see the alignment with TVM. Thanks for having me!

How do you describe your performance style?

Soul-folk musical styling with storytelling, banter, charm and... there’s always something else that comes in out of my control. I show up with my tunes and the universe assists with the rest.

When you’re not performing music, what else do you get up to?

Planning a trip or looking up cheap flights to wherever. I’m quite the daydreamer. Journaling has become a regular pass time and a great way to keep track of my dreams and really manifest them. I’ve even started binding my own journals! I’ve also been getting into reading and audiobooks lately. I think I’ve got a few (too many) books on the go.

Favourite artists?

Sooooo many! Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong definitely play a role in my approach to embodying the sweetness of music and connecting through it. Billie Holiday, Norah Jones... It's a big jar of favourites.

How do you get your creative juices flowing and what inspires you?

Starting the day, as often as possible, early, reading a Daily Om newsletter followed by intentional journaling, with some body/mind/soul warm-ups (yoga, meditation, prayer) are some of the rituals that get me on an "I've got this day" page. From there, I take from either the reading, writing or listening to my surroundings and flow with it. Creation comes not only through music but in finding my joy with the offering of the day itself.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

"Once a year go someplace you've never been before" - Dalai Lama
Travel. See and enjoy the world.

When can we next expect you to play at TVM?

15 March - Burleigh Heads
29 March Stones Corner
Super excited and grateful for the welcoming, TVM team!

Vicky O'Keefe, Gold Coast performer and the daughter of Australian rock legend Johnny O'Keefe will join us for live tunes at TVM on Sunday 15 September, following a TVM fave and Gold Coast based lad, Ondre Solien.

Come and shop market stalls by your local creative community and then grab some breakfast or lunch, find a sunny spot amongst the trees and join us for live tunes, on Sunday 15 September at Burleigh Heads State School.

Ondre Solien - 8:30am - 10:30am
Vicky O'Keefe - 11am - 1pm

About Vicky O'Keefe

Vicky O'Keefe was born into a life of rock ‘n’ roll. Her father, the late Johnny O' Keefe pioneered Rock Music in Australia, and Vicky, by the age of 9 was already an accomplished pianist, writing and performing songs with the help of the guitar that her dad had given her. Because of the family connection Vicky was introduced to a wide range of artists and musical influences, such as, Bill Haley, Carole King, Elton John and Janis Joplin. These artists made a great impact on Vicky. But her father, Johnny was always to remain her major influence.

After losing her dad at seventeen, Vicky formed a rock band and toured the east coast of Australia for 6 years, landing a contract with Warner Publishing and RCA records and releasing 3 singles. As a result, Vicky was invited to support international artists such as Rick Nelson, Suzie Quatro and America, later appearing on many high profile TV shows including Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and Sounds. A major highlight was appearing with her band on Star Search, winning 3 consecutive times while performing her own compositions. After 6 years of touring Vicky moved to Melbourne with her brother Peter, forming a duo and performing Jazz and Motown in major venues. During this period they collaborated on a tribute song for their dad, titled 'Keep The Candle Burning'. This song has now become a central highlight in all of Vicky’s live performances.

During the 90's Melbourne Promoter Greg Lynch contacted Vicky with the idea of performing a tribute show to her dad. This resulted in sellout shows at The Moorabbin Town Hall and extensive media campaigns that included major national coverage on Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton. On such a show Bert read to her a letter written by Hollywood Rock Star Tommy Sands, who express his love & admiration for herself and her father JO'K. Vicky followed with the release of  ‘I’m Counting On You,’ featuring a duet with her dad and several of her own compositions. Negotiations with Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmanian Casinos led to the launch of the Tribute CD with performances to full houses.  Audiences have a strong connection with Vicky through the love of her dad and his music.

Vicky was invited to perform her tribute show on overseas cruise, Rock The Boat 2 with Chubby Checker. Her performance on the Cruise was rated as the most popular and Vicky was invited to do another cruise, Rock The Boat 4 with The Sweet, Brian Cadd, Russell Morris and Molly Meldrum. After the cruise Vicky went into the studio and recorded an original album titled '50 Diamonds', which captures the essence of her songwriting featuring the best of her compositions. VOK continues performing around Australia promoting her latest album, '50 Diamonds' and performing her father’s hits and favorites from her contemporaries. Her passion for singing and performing is supported by a loyal following from all over Australia.

Blues and roots this Fathers Day at TVM with Matthew Armitage

Matthew Armitage will join us for the first time this Sunday at The Village Markets, from 8:30am - 10:30am, followed by Lily Budiasa from 11am - 1pm.

Blues and roots guitarist and folksy singer-songwriter Matthew Armitage uses his nylon acoustic guitar to contour up the sound of a South Pacific blues band. The guitar is mellow but busy with multiple parts, his foot stomp pulses warmly and a 60’s tambourine clacks along with his voice, all steeped in a deep musical traditions.  While Armitage these days gigs constantly around Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, he has also performed in the past with rock'n'roll legend Wanda Jackson, toured Australia as a solo supporting Pete Murray, warped out Angus Stones 30th birthday party with his heavy instrumental duo Chesta Hedron, and rocked Margot Robbies wedding with his raw rock and blues duo The Swamps.

We chatted to Matthew in the lead up to his gig this Fathers Day at TVM to find out more about this talented musician and rad dad:

Tell us about your family?
My wife Candi and I met in Wellington New Zealand when she traveled there on holiday at the end of 2012.  I moved over to live with her 6 months later and pursue my music career here in the GC and Northern Rivers NSW.  We now have a 3 year old girl called Iluka, live in Tweed Heads very close to the river and life is pretty amazing!
Why are you looking forward to playing some tunes at TVM this Fathers Day?
I love using my guitar playing and musical mind to bring people into a common experience together.  The joy of seeing a small kid recognise a nursery rhyme melody, kids bouncing to an old time boogie beat or adults hearing a distant call from a forgotten song I've found is why I love playing at markets and yeah Fathers Day means I get to think about some songs that Dad's might like too....I might play one or two songs for my Dad, he loves blues guitarists like Clapton, JJ Cale, George Thourghgood, Mark Knopfler.
Do you have a favourite TVM stall or is there something you’ll be checking out while you visit TVM?
My family eats Vegan so we will be hitting up the vegan food trucks and also looking forward to relaxing on a rug and soaking up the atmosphere.

What sort of vibes can we expect from your set at TVM?
I'll be playing a bunch of my own songs from my latest album New Tide. The album is pretty live sounding and is all about my fusion of blues and coastal folk styles through my voice, acoustic guitar and a wooden foot stomp and tambourine. Songs of the soul, travel and heart.

Matthew Armitage, by Trent Mitchell @trent_mitchell_

Producer Marquee Moon and MC Kimbosabi fell in love via a Byron Bay garage to the beat of disco samples and Japanese elevator music. Now, not only a typical couple that wears each others clothes, the DJ duo burst onto the scene in a big way last summer as In the Flowers, steamrolling a major set at Party in the Paddock, a residency at Soultrain Byron Bay and Locura's CherryPop Drag night.

Blooming with a fresh scent of 'funkadelic jungle grooves', likened to influences; Daft Punk and Steve Monite's Nigerian Funk represented in their rumbling downtempo house to frantic footwork.

TVM's resident Intern Gemma Lyndon chatted with the pair in the lead up to their debut set at TVM this Sunday 4 August at Burleigh Heads, followed by TVM crowd fave Lily Budiasa.

The lineup:
8:30am - 10:30am In The Flowers
11am - 1pm Lily Budiasa

Hi Kim and Marcos! Welcome to The Village Markets!

We are so excited for your first gig at TVM this Sunday. What should we expect from you guys?

Hi there! Expect some torrential rains because we are going to be sweating up a storm! LOL just kidding. We will bringing only good vibes to TVM. Expect a lot of disco classics as well as a mix of jungle funk grooves that really get your feet stomping through the markets.

Tell us a little bit about yourselves? Where are you from and where did you come up with the idea and inspiration for In the Flowers?

Kimbosabi is originally from Central Queensland and Marcos is all the way from Buenos Aires Argentina… Hola! We met about a year ago and fell in love via a Byron Bay garage to the beat of disco samples and Japanese elevator music.

In The Flowers is the concept of bringing you out of your mind and dropping into your body. We love having an energy exchange with our crowd and bringing good vibes to the people. We are obviously inspired by nature and flowers and how they blossom in their own way.

Why did you choose the Gold Coast’s The Village Markets to perform at?

We love TVM and would always pop in whenever we’re around Goldy. We love the vibe and walking around with a coffee then sitting under the trees listening to some good tunes. Sunday sorted!

We hear you are now resident DJs at the Northern in Byron! What has been your biggest highlight to date?

The Soultrain night at The Northern was definitely a highlight for us! We were so impressed by the turn out of the town and especially how dressed up everyone was! Can we please live in cheetah print shirts and flares forever?!

How do you describe your performance style ?

Our performance style is a mix of Kimbosabi’s love for dancing and expression whilst blending Marquee Moon’s experience as a live artist in psychedelic rock and funk.

When you aren’t performing in front of crowds, what do you do in your spare time?

Marquee is a music producer so he is constantly working in other projects as well as working on a light installation for live sets at Festivals. Kimbosabi is working at Spell & the Gypsy as well as studying Kinesiology. She is preparing to launch her first womens dance night in Byron! Watch this space.

Favourite artists (other than yourself ).

Kevin Parker, anyone from 90s HipHop, The Flaming Lips, Andre 3000, Unkown Mortal Orchestra, Khruangbin, Gorillaz, Noname, Daft Punk, PNAU.

How do you get inspired and what do you do to get the creative ideas flowing?

Lately we have been traveling up and down the coast and actually find a lot of inspiration on our road trips. We would turn it into our own game where we pick a theme and start making a playlist about it like Psychedelic Hungover where we combine dreamy-hipnotic beats with psychedelic rock like Air, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, Gorillaz, The Beatles.

What part of your job would people find most surprising?

The amount of times people request Staying Alive by Bee-Gees… luckily for us we froth the Bee-Gees!

Who would you like to have a 30-minute meeting with?

Oprah.

Best advice you have ever received?

"Nothing in nature blooms all year, be patient with yourself"

Thanks so much for sharing guys! x
