Meet Elodie Darwish, founder of beautiful handcrafted contemporary jewellery label elodie Jewellery.
Tell us about how and when your label was created?
About 12 years ago when I completed my design studies. I started off making jewellery on the side of my day job, and 12 years later I’m still doing it.
What pieces are included within your range?
Everything from rings to cuff-links to necklaces and bangles.
What is your creative background?
I studied Industrial Design at Uni and then went on to do jewellery design at TAFE in Melbourne.
Where is the label designed and made?
Until now I’ve been hand making my designs. Although as I’m ready to grow the business, I’m in the process of considering other avenues of getting my designs partly produced so that I can finish them off.
What inspires you?
Mostly form, geometric and organic. I’m often inspired by furniture and lighting and other design objects I see in lifestyle magazines, in stores, online.
Latest collection consists of?
I’m just working on a new collection at the moment that will introduce some new rings and new earrings.
What's on your mood board?
I don’t have one….but I have heaps of Pinterest boards that I trawl through to spark ideas and I can tell you now there is no theme or trend…it’s the biggest miss mash of boards you ever did see.
What’s your creative space like?
To be honest a little messier than I’d like. I’ve nailed keeping my room clean and tidy now that I’m a grown up…but somehow I’ve not managed to extend that to my studio. Working on it.
What music do you listen to while designing/creating?
Generally nothing. I like working in silence, most people think I’m crazy. Occasionally I listen to the radio if I feel like a bit of top 40 fun or I’ll listen to pod casts.
A day in the life of you consists of?
Well on a studio day (when not at the day job) I like to start early after I’ve been for a walk. What I’m doing varies from week to week, whether I’m making rings or making parts to earrings or painstakingly working out what I could do on social media, that part kills me.
Favourite TVM stall (besides yours of course)?
Ummmm….because I haven’t actually had a chance to check everyone else out yet, as I’ve only done one market and was there solo, BUT, I did make my way to Mio Wraps to get the most delicious buckwheat wrap!! They are my favourite!
I love scrolling through Scandinavian design blogs and design websites in general.
What are we likely to find you wearing on market day? Any favourite labels?
Something super comfy - jeans and a top or an easy dress.
I’m not much of a label girl. I’ll buy what I like no matter where it’s from. The wardrobe spans across quite an array of labels from something second hand to the staple Aussie labels to the occasional (Aussie) designer piece. I LOVE bright colours. I’m not afraid to where the most vibrant colours possible….and then some days I do the Melbourne thing and wear all black…usually that day means it’s bloody cold outside…often it’s unintentional.
What can we expect from the next collection/what are your plans for 2017 and beyond?
well, I’m working on new pieces at the moment…I don’t know how it will unfold. Basically my plan for here on in is to get my work out there. I’ve been a little lazy over the years but I’ve been given the kick up the bum I needed and so it’s time to bust out.
