Less than 8% to Landfill in 2022, now that’s something we’re proud of!

Jan 11, 2023 | Sustainability

You would hopefully know by now that we're on a mission to become a zero waste event at The Village Markets and have been working towards this goal for years now. We do this in a number of ways (read more here).

We're proud to announce that in our 2022 event summary done by our partners at Climate Wave - from 2 tonnes of waste from our events - only 8% went to landfill!

This is something we are extremely proud of and would not be possible without the help of Climate Wave, our food vendors for ensuring that all food packaging is compostable or recyclable at TVM and of course our customers for disposing of your waste accordingly, or bringing your own reusables.

It takes a village!

"The organic food was predominantly from vendors and was fed into the composting system at Southern Beaches Community Gardens in Tugun. The compostable packaging had the same outcome, with Southern Beaches Community Gardens turning the compostable packaging into a valuable resource through their composting practices.

It has been noted that the recycling could have been lower had all vendors been complying with the compostable packaging. In addition to stall holders being responsible for their own waste created during the markets.

The 10 cent refund containers were donated through the container deposit scheme in QLD to Surfrider Foundation.

Overall, only 8% of waste created from TVM was destined for landfill, which meant a whopping 92% was diverted and was able to be used as a resource." Climate Wave.
