"I wanted to create a swimwear brand that supports the real images of women along with an added self reminder to love yourself and be you". Read on to find out more about founder of Born Bair Swimwear, Nicky Bell and find her and her gorgeous women's swimwear this Sunday 6th May at TVM.
In a short paragraph, tell us about your background – what did you study or what field did you work in prior to starting your business?
I studied a dual degree at UQ; Business Management and Event Management
What made your pursue your creative passion?
Currently being a blogger on Instagram I felt a need for more of a positive body image especially for younger women. Self-love and confidence really lacked and with the use of social media there can be a wrong impression left with who and what we are supposed to look like. A lot of women conform to unrealistic expectations and that why I wanted to create a swimwear brand that supports the real image of women along with the added self reminder to love yourself and be you.
When did you take the plunge and start your own business?
I took the plunge last year in March and started planning my business model and line.
What does your brand consist of?
My brand at the moment consists of a small collection of simple designs that accentuate the real you. All of my swimwear fit very comfortably and are made of fabrics that are soft and wearable.
Where is the label designed and made?
The label is designed here in Brisbane and is made overseas.
What inspires you?
I am inspired everyday by my friends and family – but most of all, my partner who lost his mother recently from MND. His passion and courage to finish an Ironman to raise money for MND encouraged to think that anything is possible if you have the passion and determination.
What are your plans for the brand and where do you hope it takes you?
Currently, I am in the process of having my second collection made and will be launching it at the end of August/early September. I would love to be a regular TVM stall holder and even possibly look to try and get the brand into some local stores.
What were the biggest challenges when launching your brand?
The biggest challenges we’re actually doing rather than saying. I took inspiration from friends and family and also did a lot of market research to understand the current market. Finally seeing all of your hard work come together during the photoshoot was very rewarding for me – I love hearing and seeing women feel confident and comfortable in their swimwear. This gives me the most joy.
What is the best thing about having your own business?
I would have to say that it doesn’t feel like hard work when its for yourself. I could work 7 days a week morning and night and not complain for a second. It would be my dream to do this full time as this is where my passion lies.
One piece of advice for someone hoping to start their own small business that you wish you’d been told?
Just do it – you are only going to gain more knowledge and confidence by starting something you didn’t think was possible. If I had a dollar for every business idea that I said I would do, I would be rich! If you have the passion and drive you can make it happen.
