Introducing Sandy Cousens, founder of health and lifestyle business Calm Body and Home.
I’ve been in the interior design field for nearly 15 years, starting as a mural artist for the residential and commercial sector. This organically lead into colour consulting, interior styling then renovations, opening up a retail store and then the joy of furthering both my design and art skills.
What made your pursue your creative passion?
I’ve always found art to be a form of meditation for me, and through a health journey, that enhanced my spiritual journey, I realised I wanted to be a compass to my sons and live my passion; so hopefully I’m showing them that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.
When did you take the plunge and start your own business?
It was after meeting my now husband 15 years ago, and deciding to pursue my creativity. However, my real passion, Calm Body and Home eventuated about a year ago, and I’ve just launched the new site, products and social media these last few months.
What does your brand consist of?
Calm Body and Home is all about gently guiding people to live a healthier and calmer life. Through my design, I’ve created a series of artworks, aromatherapy products and workshops that are geared towards living a holistically healthier life.
Where is the label designed and made?
Everything is created on the Gold Coast.
What inspires you?
This life that I’ve been so blessed to have, my sons, my health and the beautiful souls I get to meet daily.
What are your plans for the brand and where do you hope it takes you?
Eventually I would love to see someone running the Calm Body and Home products so I can concentrate on the creative and host more workshops to spread the word. I’ve been blessed to meet people from the UK who have shown interest in my products so I would love to see them over there and even team up with like souls to host some workshops abroad too. I would love to see people realise that it doesn’t have to be expensive to be healthy and by using the kits I’ve created, people from all demographics can do just that.
What were the biggest challenges when launching your brand?
I’m in my forties, and as much as I don’t like to use that as an excuse, I’ve never used social media up until recently, so this has been a whole new expertise and learning experience - but I’m getting there! A challenge is always good for the soul (!).
What is the best thing about having your own business?
The feeling of achievement, being able to attend events at my children’s school and having such beautiful comments of how it’s helped people in various aspects of their life. It’s such a blessing.
One piece of advice for someone hoping to start their own small business that you wish you’d been told?
Have all your ducks in a row, be brave with social media, but most importantly live your truth; don’t suffer from ‘comparitonitis’, as by living your passion, you will raise your vibration and attract like souls or those that need to be attracted to you. If you live your truth, all will unfold at the right time.
