Stall Profile :: Little Knot Studio

Oct 24, 2019 | Stall Profile

Like many small businesses, Little Knot Studio was born when founder Rachael Coonan couldn't quite find the product she was looking for in the market place. The Toowoomba based Assistant Manager in the plumbing industry used creativity passed down from her late mother to try her hand at creating her own macrame wedding arbor and the rest, as they say, is history.

"My love of Macramé started in 2018 when I was planning our wedding and wanted something that would stand out, for our arbor, I started looking into macramé hangings to put on a timber arbor but couldn’t find the exact style I was looking for, so I decided to try my hand at making one. It was a bit of a challenge tackling such a huge piece straight up but I ended up making a Macramé arbor that was almost 3m long and absolutely fell in love with the craft! I have been making macramé since then."

Do you have a creative background?

My mum was always into arts and crafts when I was young so a lot of my memories as a child were doing craft with her. She passed away when I was young, I didn’t have a lot to do with arts and crafts after that, Since picking up macramé I fell as though I’m defiantly channeling that creative flair from Mum again. My dad has also told me he did a stint of making macramé plant hangers when he spent some time in hospital to pass time so maybe I got it from him also.

Is this a side hustle or are you pursuing Little Knot Studio on a full-time basis?

Macramé is my side hustle at the moment, I work a full time job as assistant manager in plumbing supplies.

What products are included within your range?

I make all things macrame - macramé wall hangings, bags, earrings, key rings, arbors, buntings, owls & table runners, just to list a few. My greatest loves are the large wall hangings. I also love making custom orders, as I love making new designs.

What inspires you creatively?

My mother has inspired my step-mother, she is extremely creative, she has also helped me with the sewing side of things when I make linings on my bags.

Also the amazing things which can be done with macramé, I love seeing what new creations everyone comes up with.

What's your creative space like?

I create from home. I have a set up in my lounge room but I also love to set up my station outside when it’s not too windy.

Do you implement any sustainable practices within your business, if so tell us about this?

I live on a property so my natural timber dowels are sourced from around the farm.

Why did you choose TVM as a platform for your business?

I don’t live on the Coast but I have heard great things about TVM. I wanted to grow my following and experience the coastal markets.

Favourite way to unwind?

Making macramé of course. And spending time with my fur babies.

Websites or accounts you’re loving for business inspiration right now?

I am inspired by Jamie from JAC Home Heart and her growing business, this is where I get my natural cotton cord. I also love that she encourages other makers and brings everyone together.
