Moss and Malibu was born on the West Coast, inspired by a vacation on the shores of Malibu - sun-drenched babes, hot bikinis and nostalgic bohemian vibes.
Designer Vesna Trivuncevic, says she was tired of garish styles, boring cuts and - worst of all - under developed tropical prints, so she set out to create island inspired swim that was beautiful.
“We live by the beach and love all things swim, salt, and surf. We're a small team with big dreams and wouldn't have it any other way.
We design premium swimwear with our own unique prints you won't find anywhere else. Handmade in Bali using the highest quality fabric, sexy cuts and zero short cuts.”
What is your creative background/qualifications?
Dip Fashion Design - Whitehouse Institute of Design
Tell us about the name Moss and Malibu, how did this come about?
Moss & Malibu - I have long been obsessed with California and the laid back but exciting, LA vibe.
The name came about after many, many weeks of looking for influences, playing with word clouds and making up mood boards. Once I settled on Moss & Malibu, it just felt right.
What is your core product?
Ethically produced swimwear & Organic Cotton Tees.
What inspires you creatively?
A few things:
California.
Travel.
Island life.
Retro Hawaiian vibes (think the Royal Hawaiian Hotel)
Do you implement any sustainable practices within your company, if so tell us about this?
We limit the use of single use plastics - orders are shipped in custom made boxes that are so pretty you'll want to keep them forever!
We hope to exclusively use recycled nylon (made from discarded fishing nets) by 2022.
We are also a "slow" fashion label, focusing on quality and more timeless shapes, that will ensure many wears. We are NOT a fast-fashion label. Our goal is to have you love your bikini SO much you can't wait until the next summer to pull it out again.
Our factory workers are paid well. We want their work to be sustainable and adequately compensated, so they can grow with us too.
Do you collaborate with any other local GC/Brisbane businesses?
Le Salty Label (wholesale and a BIG giveaway coming in December).
Why did you choose TVM as a platform for your business?
It was so clear that this was not your ordinary market. We have high standards for our business and felt our values aligned with those of TVM.
Quality. Unique product. Energetic vibe.
Why is it important for people to shop small and support local businesses this festive season?
The world is moving towards a corporate-consumer world, where so many brands are owned by the same few companies. This has led to products being mass produced for the lowest common denominator, where profits and mass appeal are more important than creativity and product quality.
“Shopping small” is your vote against this model. It’s your vote for a world where products are unique and created by talented individuals with sustainability and longevity in mind.
At the end of the day, we are always voting with our actions.
Where’s your favourite local coffee haunt?
Down in Nelson Bay (where we are based) it is The Little Nel. Perfection!
Favourite book?
So many to choose from, but I always loved The Kite Runner.
Favourite podcasts?
Joe Rogan Podcast - what an eclectic mix of guests. You'll always learn something.
Favourite way to unwind?
Beach. VITAMIN SEA.
