Introducing Sandy Cousens, founder of health and lifestyle business Calm Body and Home.

I’ve been in the interior design field for nearly 15 years, starting as a mural artist for the residential and commercial sector. This organically lead into colour consulting, interior styling then renovations, opening up a retail store and then the joy of furthering both my design and art skills.

What made your pursue your creative passion?

I’ve always found art to be a form of meditation for me, and through a health journey, that enhanced my spiritual journey, I realised I wanted to be a compass to my sons and live my passion; so hopefully I’m showing them that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.

When did you take the plunge and start your own business?

It was after meeting my now husband 15 years ago, and deciding to pursue my creativity. However, my real passion, Calm Body and Home eventuated about a year ago, and I’ve just launched the new site, products and social media these last few months.

What does your brand consist of?

Calm Body and Home is all about gently guiding people to live a healthier and calmer life. Through my design, I’ve created a series of artworks, aromatherapy products and workshops that are geared towards living a holistically healthier life.

Where is the label designed and made?

Everything is created on the Gold Coast.

What inspires you?

This life that I’ve been so blessed to have, my sons, my health and the beautiful souls I get to meet daily.

What are your plans for the brand and where do you hope it takes you?

Eventually I would love to see someone running the Calm Body and Home products so I can concentrate on the creative and host more workshops to spread the word. I’ve been blessed to meet people from the UK who have shown interest in my products so I would love to see them over there and even team up with like souls to host some workshops abroad too. I would love to see people realise that it doesn’t have to be expensive to be healthy and by using the kits I’ve created, people from all demographics can do just that.

What were the biggest challenges when launching your brand?

I’m in my forties, and as much as I don’t like to use that as an excuse, I’ve never used social media up until recently, so this has been a whole new expertise and learning experience - but I’m getting there! A challenge is always good for the soul (!).

What is the best thing about having your own business?

The feeling of achievement, being able to attend events at my children’s school and having such beautiful comments of how it’s helped people in various aspects of their life. It’s such a blessing.

One piece of advice for someone hoping to start their own small business that you wish you’d been told?

Have all your ducks in a row, be brave with social media, but most importantly live your truth; don’t suffer from ‘comparitonitis’, as by living your passion, you will raise your vibration and attract like souls or those that need to be attracted to you. If you live your truth, all will unfold at the right time.

New to TVM this Sunday is The Undercurrent, a collaborative T-shirt brand with a difference.

The Undercurrent brings locals a collection of Gold Coast inspired t-shirts which are designed by five local Gold Coast artists and printed locally. Both male and female shirts represent suburbs that locals are proud of and tourists wish they were a part of with $2 from the sale of each shirt donated to the Gold Coast surf clubs.

We chatted to founder, Carly Snodgrass:

TVM: Tell us about how and when your label was created?

CS: The label was created in 2017, but has been in the works for about a year. When I travel, I try to hunt down galleries that stock art from local artists. Sometimes I’m unlucky because it’s incredibly difficult to find, too expensive or too hard to get home. So I tend to bring interesting t-shirts home as a reminder instead, this is essentially my souvenir. I wanted to create the same for the Gold Coast but using local artists.

What pieces are included within your range?

To begin with we have a t-shirt and singlet. The t-shirt is for both guys and gals, while the singlet is better suited for just the girls, but hey, each to their own.

What is your creative background?

My background is in advertising land. I absolutely love it, but hated the sales side of it. I’m not a great creative myself, but I found my niche in managing them. That’s why I wanted to collaborate with local Gold Coast artists on this project. There’s a great artist community here on the Coast, but we do lose a lot to the ‘big smoke’ due to the limited opportunities. So it’s fantastic to be able to offer them something they are passionate about and can showcase to their mates here too.

Where is the label designed and made?

The shirts are all designed by local Gold Coast artists and they are hand screen printed in Burleigh. The first series artists are Sarah Beetson, Claudio Kirac, Kiel Tillman, Eric Koo and Byron Coathup.

What inspires you?

The Gold Coast. This place is amazing. It doesn’t matter where I travel, I love coming home to it.

Latest collection consists of?

This collection is based on suburbs. Gold Coasters are so proud of their little slice of the Gold Coast, so the artists have tried to incorporate what they love about their area. The suburbs in this collection are Coolangatta, Currumbin, Burleigh, Mermaid Beach and Surfers Paradise. There will be more to come!

What's on your mood board?

Our Pinterest account is filled with imagery of surf and skate lifestyles of the 70s and old Gold Coast tourist photos.

What’s your creative space like?

It’s a large open plan office in the Burleigh industrial district with palm tree wall paper, soft grey couches and hints of pastel pink.

What music do you listen to while designing/creating?

Spotify is my go to, nothing specific, just whatever playlist is at the top.

A day in the life of you consists of?

As The Undercurrent is about to launch, I’m yet to get into a routine. It’s all pretty manic at the moment getting everything ready. Currently my day consists of waking up, apologizing to dog for no walk, throwing on some clothes, throwing on some other clothes, go back to original clothes, grabbing a coffee in Burleigh, writing out my days to do list, going to the office, putting out fires all day, remembering I haven’t eaten yet, putting out some more fires, looking at my to do list at 7pm, maybe I’ll get onto those tomorrow, what takeaways are still open?

Favourite reads/blogs?

Big fan of the Collective Hub magazine for great entrepreneur stories.

What are we likely to find you wearing on market day? Any favourite labels?

The Undercurrent t-shirt with some Urban Outfitter denim shorts and Converse.

What can we expect from the next collection/what are your plans for 2017 and beyond?

There’s definitely more collaborations to come, this is just the beginning! More artists, more series, just wait and see.

Why TVM?

It’s a fantastic way to get feedback. Online shops are great, but they do lose the interaction with the customer. If I want to know why something isn’t selling, I want to hear it direct.

TVM stallholder Ale Ramirez of MAVERIKSTUDIO is getting ready to launch an exhibition on Friday May 8th from 7pm until 10pm at White Box Gallery in Southport titled 'COLOMBIA'. Read on to find out more....

How do you feel about your home? Your culture? Your identity? Ale Ramirez is a Colombian who has called Australia home (away from home) for the last eight years.

“I look and sound different, (foreign, dark skinned, accent, mannerisms) and people often ask me “Where are you from?” “What are your thoughts about Australia?” The more I am asked, the more I realise the misconceptions the world has about Colombia, it’s culture and community.”

Cocaine. Pablo Escobar. Guerrillas. War. Poverty. Crime. No!

This has given birth to the COLOMBIA Exhibition. You are invited to celebrate another side of Colombian culture. Explore the history, tribes and landscape of the place that is so close to her heart.

Spirituality. Design. Art. Landscape. Culture. Community. Love. Passion.

Like most developing nations, Colombia has a dark past. Media perpetuates this painful reputation, putting a shadow over the truth. As a proud Colombian woman, Ale Ramirez seeks to design against the stereotype. She communicates the truth through art, design and business.

“The world needs to know that we are more than our troubled past. We are more than the media image. We are more than a backdrop to pop culture films. I invite you into my heart and to see my home through my eyes. Fall in love with an honest, beautiful and strong Colombia.”

MAVERIKSTUDIO is a multi-disciplinary creative studio. There are two sides to Maverik. Firstly, we specialise in tailored creative outputs; digital services, graphic design, branding, photography and product management.

Secondly, we import artisan products from Colombian tribes, working with the craftsman to support the financial wellbeing of their traditional way of life. Our services are varied – design, culture and community always work hand in hand in our eyes. We reconnect consumers with the makers. When is the last time you knew who made your handbag? Or dress? Our products close the gap between the craftsman and consumer.

Love comes before money. We like to think big but we want to do things that we love.

1908200_1065818543432638_8771205070394607482_n

We support two Colombian tribes – the Wayuu and the Chami Puro. The Wayuu tribe, an indigenous Latin American community inhabit, La Guajira Peninsula, on the border of Colombia and Venezuela. The Wayuu people have a very strong matriarchal culture. The women have a final say when it comes to cultural, religious, political, family & medical matters. The Wayuu women are responsible for passing down the traditions and cultural beliefs. Maintaining the indigenous language, beliefs and traditions in a rapidly developing world is a massive achievement for the Wayuu people. MAVERIKSTUDIO donates 10% of profits the tribe.

Much like the history of Indigenous Australians, the Colombian tribes have been affected by instability through decades of politics, corruption and forced displacement. The tribes of my homeland use their talents and cultural strength to grow and push forward. The crafts they produce are a tangible celebration of culture, pride and strength.

The foundation of MAVERIKSTUDIO is one of service to the community. We make money to pay the rent, but we work to be productive for our cause. Of the 86 tribes in Colombia, we are supporting two. One day we will make it to 86. On our last trip to Colombia we were fortunate enough to be invited to stay with the tribe, meet with the artists, share their stories and become a part of their family.

The COLOMBIA exhibition will show you the other side of Colombia. It showcases many different cities and villages. See images of our first donation to the Wayuu tribe. Take home a piece of the exhibition with you, postcards depicting some of our favourite images are available.

You can also purchase MAVERIKSTUDIO products (at the special price of 15% off) and speak to Ale Ramirez about her passion for Colombia and its people.

We welcome you to make donations (large or small), which will be directly provided to the tribes of Colombia.

Find the Facebook page for this event, here.

OPS Kids  is an exciting new addition to TVM and we can't wait to welcome this gorgeous stall, which will not only be retailing beautifully handcrafted play tents for children, there will be an interactive DIY element, allowing TVM bambino's to create and have fun.

Founder Sinai Mejias, says  "In a world full of technology and mass production we need to find our on way to create. I remember when I was 10, everything was about playing in my backyard and finding new adventures. That is why I decided to create spaces for the little ones. Spaces where the can escape from reality and let the imagination be the protagonist. My play tents are handmade (by me) and they are all unique."
