In the lead up to International Women’s Day this Sunday March 8th, we’ve chatted to a handful of talented women from our very own TVM community. We hope you enjoy reading!

‘Here’s to strong women may we know them. May we be them. May we raise them’. Unknown.

Name: Brittiny Worth
Brand: Lakiki Jewellery
When and why did you start your business? I started my business in 2015, inspired by my love of design and stones. I still work in Real Estate while juggling my growing business.
What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
Keeping the quality up to standard, with manufacturers being based around the globe. The pieces are designed by me on the Gold Coast and manufactured in Bali, with stones sourced from the Dominican Republic and India. Supply chain consistency is definitely the biggest challenge.
Advice for fellow women wanting to start a business?
Put any fears you may have aside and just have a go. It may seem like a really big jump but start small and have confidence in yourself. If I think back to when I started, I would have loved someone to tell me to just follow my gut and just do what resonates with me!

Name: Carla Aplin
Brand: Desert Wanderer
When and why did you start your business?
I became a mother to my little girl in 2014 and felt so inspired to create around that period in my life and the desire to create something that would inspire her. I had previously worked in retail as the manager of Dissh (boutique) for years.
What has been your biggest challenge in business so far? Social media and the growth that it has seen in the last six years – the change in algorithms, keeping up with trends, it’s harder to be seen. Reeducating yourself and trying to keep up with marketing is difficult too. Also, being the only person working in the business from start to finish (aside from husband Simon who helps with market day setup!)
Advice for fellow women wanting to start a business?
Just go for it, follow your heart. If it feels right and you want to do it, be inspired by the people around you, create a community of people that support you and just 100 % go for it! It can be amazing!

Name: Keele Pont
Brand: Prickle Free
Why did you start your business?
We have always been interested in reducing plastic and single use waste. We designed a product that looked good and was nice to use, so people had an alternative to single use razors.
What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
Working full-time during the week and keeping my business going on the side and on weekends, it can be hard to keep it all going. I am a nanny full-time.
Advice for fellow women wanting to start a business?
Be passionate about what you’re doing. Also markets are a great way to connect with people and add a personal element.

Name: Louise Hargreaves.
Brand: Thrown.
When and why did you start your business? In 2019. I love being creative and wanted to step away from just doing graphic design (Louise had previously worked in design for some of the largest print magazines in Australia). I lived in Sydney originally and did a pottery course and then more recently here on the Gold Coast my husband Rhys bought me a wheel. Friends started telling me I should sell the things I was making. I absolutely love doing it and since coming to the markets it just inspires me to get back onto the wheel. Mondays following market day I am always so inspired! I love seeing people buy my stuff and being a mum, it’s so nice to spend the time at the markets, side by side with other stallholders whom I have come to know well. Rhys has the kids while I am at the markets and then during the week I am creating pieces from my home. It works perfectly around my family life.
Advice for fellow women wanting to start a business?
Just go for it! I never dreamed I would be selling my products at the markets. As long as you are enjoying what you are doing, then it will come out in your work. I only make products I would want in my own home, that I think are functional and beautiful. That is what I want people to take from my pieces.

Name: Christina Cassaniti
Brand: Only One The Label
When and why did you start your business?
I was living with my male housemate and needed some nice lounge wear to wear when he had his mates over. I couldn’t find anything that was stylish, trendy and high quality, so I started designing pieces for myself.
What has been your biggest challenge in business so far?
Mentality, believing this is not just a great concept in my head, that it actually is a great product – imposter syndrome, overcoming self doubt. Cash flow is also a challenge when you’re starting out.
Advice for fellow women wanting to start a business?
Go for it, don’t sit on the fence about it. For me, the biggest thing was I did not want to be an old woman thinking about what could have been. Put one foot in front of the other and if it’s meant to be, the universe will lead you there.

Name: Nao Yamaguchi (with her daughters Sana and Noa)
Brand: Nicotte
When and why did you start your business?
I started Nicotte in 2013, after I found out I was pregnant. I wanted to have an option to stay at home with my child.
What has been the biggest challenge for you in business so far?
The biggest challenge for me is to make clothing “size adjustable”. I have confidence in the quality of my work and the materials we use. The linens and cottons age so well, so you can wear them as long as you love them. When I was pregnant I gained weight and my clothes size changed - some of my favorite clothes didn’t fit me at all. Also, I found kids clothes are just one season as they grow so fast. So, I made most of Nicotte lines (both adults and kids)  size adjustable. For example kids may wear a dress and as they get older, it can be worn as a top.
Advice for fellow women wanting to start a business?
My advise for starting business is to follow your heart.
I learned sewing from my grandma as both of my parents worked full-time. I stayed with her, watching her sew and learning everyday. Since then, sewing is part of my life and my childhood dream was to have my own brand and also spend time with my kids.

We love nothing more than welcoming new homegrown businesses into our community. Allow us to introduce Ben and Nicole Braithwaite and their business, Anvil + Essence.

Anvil + Essence was created In Burleigh Heads, Australia by husband and wife team Ben and Nicole Braithwaite. A shared passion by two different backgrounds, merged to bring a unique, modern perspective on traditional health and well-being.

Nicole and Ben

A compassionate Naturopathy student with a creative flair, Nicole began regularly crafting tea blends for her then fiancé Ben to support his mental clarity, stamina and recovery while working labor intensive shift work as a commercial Refrigeration Mechanic.

The beginning of an idea formed during that time as the benefits became a way of life. What started as studied relief, naturally formed into an exciting opportunity to bring the same level of care and support to others.

A new concept was formed to celebrate the ongoing study, skill and experience in the creation of innovative health, well-being and lifestyle products.

The duo say their passion comes to life by ensuring they provide an exceptional level of service, craftmanship and quality organic, cruelty free and sustainable products, with their clients highest well-being and satisfaction in mind.

They believe in satisfaction, sustainability and a great tasting cup of tea. Which is why they have created their hand blended teas that are designed for both taste and wellbeing. They only use 100% organic botanical ingredients throughout their product range. That means a well-rounded, vibrant taste with no nasty chemicals, additives or pesticides.

Every single ingredient and blended tea has been thoughtfully crafted to enhance and assist in the body’s healthy function. Chosen from a variety of ethically sourced Australian based suppliers, then carefully packaged within their sleek, modern violet MIRON glass containers.

Growing health, wellbeing and sustainability awareness, means people are more interested in enjoying organic products that provide a better taste with more benefits.

"When Nicole and I started Anvil + Essence, we always maintained that we would use the highest quality in every aspect of our journey to provide a modern-day solution to traditional, organic tea. Each product is delicately hand blended under our strict level of quality control, ensuring each product is beautiful in taste and appearance," says Ben.

"We love making tea and we plan on making them for a long time to come, which means we are here to provide long term sustainable solutions with a great quality product."

Congratulations to Ben and Nicole, who have launched their organic tea and wellness space online today. Head on over to take advantage of their generous launch discount!

Stall Profile :: Dolce Organico

This one is for the sweet toothed folk amongst us who appreciate organic, 'no nasties' ingredients - with cute packaging to boot. If you haven't yet experienced Dolce Organico then head to TVM this Sunday 2 June.

Dolce Organico was founded by Nutritionist and food enthusiast, Dianne Doyle in 2017.

Dianne has a passion for creating food that is wholesome and inclusive for all dietary types. She found that finding 'guilt-free' treats that were allergy friendly and not full of 'nasties' was really hard for her clients so she decided to try some recipes out herself.

After trialing many different recipes Dianne perfected her Plant-Based Meringues, her clients loved them. Her organic vegan meringues are free from gluten, lactose, egg, animal products, nuts and fat. Dianne's meringues are designed to be a guilt-free treat and only have 1 teaspoon of raw organic sugar per serve of 3 meringues.

When did you take the plunge and start your own business?

As a nutritionist, I wasn't sure about starting another brand but my clients (and family, friends, neighbours and pretty much everyone I knew) kept raving about my meringues. So in November 2017, I finally made the plunge and launched Dolce Organico!

What does your brand consist of?

Dolce Organico has 5 core flavours; vanilla, hazelnut, coffee, bubblegum and raspberry, that come in two sizes (large & small), currently there are 2 'special flavours', Pink Champagne and Bake-A-Wish Unicorn.

All of the ingredients in our meringues are cruelty-free and sourced naturally. Our meringues contain no artificial colours + our colourings are sourced from organic superfoods such as; Blue Spirulina, Pink Pitaya, Black Goji Berry and Cacao.

Where possible our flavourings are naturally derived from their original source.

It's important to us that each ingredient is ethically sourced.

Where is the label designed and made?

Dolce Organico is a Gold Coast business that's worked hard to try and source it's ingredients and packaging locally. All of our products are made and packaged on the Gold Coast.

What inspires you?

I draw inspiration from foodies such as Jamie Oliver, Sarah Wilson & Lola Berry. Each of these amazing foodies are trying to change the way we look at eating healthy, real food and make cooking (and eating right) 'sexy' again.

What are your plans for the brand and where do you hope it takes you?

I would really love Dolce Organico to become a go-to food for people with and without allergies to make eating and sharing more inclusive for everyone.

I would also like to keep adding new flavours and, down the track, new products to the Dolce Organico line and eventually use the brand as a platform to help educate others on how eating real foods doesn't have to be boring.

What were the biggest challenges when launching your brand?

One of the biggest hurdles that I had to overcome is the perception that organic and vegan food is bland or tasteless and not as good as the 'real thing'.

Another challenge has been sourcing and learning more about sustainable packaging. And what the pros and cons (and true impact) of various preparing, shipping and packing methods actually are.

What is the best thing about having your own business?

One of the best things about running Dolce Organico, has been being able to meet and work with some of our favourite brands, such as a recent collab with Edible Beauty and Soulara.

Another amazing opportunity that's come from running a business, has been having the opportunity to make a real impact on things that matter. For example, I have recently teamed up with the Make a Wish foundation for her Bake-a-Wish Unicorn meringues ($1 of each jar sold gets donated), which has been really cool.

But the absolute best thing is having the ability to invent and create new flavours and 'play' in the kitchen!

Connect with Dolce Organico online, here.
Or find them this Sunday at TVM 2 June 2019, Burleigh Heads.

We wrapped up 2018 with our first ever Brisbane event - and it was a beauty! We lined the main street of Stones Corner with boutique market stalls, street food vendors and epic live tunes. The Craft Parlour joined us for a kids creative workshop and there was street entertainment thanks to The Circular Witch. Locals embraced us, visitors flocked and cafes were heaving with friendly folk all keen to see what the fuss was all about. You came, you shopped and we had a blast!

We will be trading at Stones Corner on a quarterly basis with our next event on Sunday 31 March and we can't wait.

We're also hoping to partner with like-minded businesses in the area for TVM Stones Corner, so if you're interested we would love to hear from you.
